Speech recognition makes it possible for users of Mac OS Tiger to manipulate and control their Mac experience using their voice alone. With simple "speakable items" you can have instant access to some of Mac's most important features, and you can even create new speakable items to further customize your Mac experience.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mac OS Tiger with Mac's Speech feature enabled
  • Microphone
  1. Step 1

Start your Mac and log in to your profile using your username and password. You do not need to be a system administrator, since Speech is a customizable setting. It can be enabled in one profile but disabled in another.

  2. Step 2

Click on the "Apple" icon in the Finder bar.

  3. Step 3

Click the "System Preferences" link in the Apple icon drop-down menu.

  4. Step 4

Double click on the "Speech" application in the System Preferences window.

  5. Step 5

Turn on the "Speakable Items" button to enable currently recognized spoken commands.

  6. Step 6

Choose the microphone you wish to use using the drop-down menu marked "Microphone." The iSight microphone is selected by default.

  7. Step 7

Choose a listening key. The listening key is the key you need to press in order to make Mac OS aware that you are about to issue a spoken command.

  8. Step 8

Choose to select "Speak Command Acknowledgment" to have the OS indicate to you that the speech recognition system has detected and processed your command correctly.

  9. Step 9

Use the Mac OS Tiger speech recognition function by pressing the listening key you have chosen and simply say the speakable item you would like to use. For example, you could press the Escape (Esc) key and say "Open Safari." You would then hear the speech recognition acknowledgment, and Safari would open.

  10. Step 10

Use speech recognition to play chess against your Mac. You can issue movement commands for your pieces and the computer will process those commands for you and execute your orders.

Tips & Warnings
  • Users who face accessibility issues can pair Speech with VoiceOver, Mac's universal access feature for those who may have difficulty seeing the screen or who wish to enhance their accessibility. Coupled with VoiceOver, it's possible for anyone to use a Mac with ease.
  • Be aware that while the system is highly accurate, it is still possible that Mac OS will not recognize specific spoken commands, particularly in situations where you do not fully enunciate. Try to choose speakable items that are easier to say and do not sound readily like other commands.
