Mac OS Tiger, version 10 of the Mac operating system, is one of the most powerful operating systems available and also one of the most user-friendly. It is not possible to directly uninstall Mac OS Tiger without completely formatting the hard drive or installing a new operating system to take its place.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • External hard drive (for backups)
  • Mac OS Tiger
  • Mac OS upgrade or downgrade
  1. Step 1

Back up files you wish to save from the uninstall process. You may want to invest in an external hard drive or you may want to copy files to another Mac on the network.

  2. Step 2

Place the operating system upgrade disc in the appropriate optical drive.

  3. Step 3

Follow the onscreen prompts that will walk you through the installation process.

  4. Step 4

Choose to upgrade your OS instead of format. Upgrading will give you access to the latest features, fixes and enhancements available from Apple.

  5. Step 5

Download updates from within the Mac OS Tiger environment. Simply click on the "Check for Updates" option in the System Preferences > System Updates folder.

  6. Step 6

Copy your entire hard drive to an external hard drive so that you are still able to operate the computer, but then feel free to delete and format the entire primary hard drive. This will allow you to keep your functionality while you complete the process.

Tips & Warnings
  • Choose to upgrade Mac OS Tiger instead of formatting the hard drive. For instance, the newer Mac OS Leopard includes even more features and enhancements over Mac OS Tiger.
  • You can uninstall specific components in Mac OS Tiger by simply dragging and dropping them in the Trash bin. There are no uninstallers like the ones you find in Windows operating systems.
  • Be aware that should you choose to uninstall Mac OS Tiger by formatting the hard drive, you will lose ALL of the information currently stored on the drive. Back up those files prior to completing an uninstall by format.
  • You should be aware that Apple does not support any particular uninstall method. You uninstall Mac OS Tiger at your own risk.
  • Be aware that you can not directly downgrade from within Mac OS Tiger. You can only upgrade, unless you were to complete a format.
