A virtual private network (VPN) is an important tool for many companies and organizations. A VPN enables such organizations to confidentially communicate with one another over great distances. If the VPN fails, it can make it difficult to share important documents and information. Windows Vista is a great operating system for enabling, monitoring and serving VPNs, but they're never foolproof. Fortunately it is possible to repair a VPN in Windows Vista.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Windows Vista
  • Virtual Personal Network

Repair a VPN Failure in Windows Vista

Step1
Write down the error code to determine what the problem with the VPN connection is. Usually Windows Vista will give you a brief but detailed description of the failure.
Step2
Head to the "Control Panel" to begin the repair process. This is most easily done by pressing the "Start" menu button, followed by the "Control Panel" icon.
Step3
Select the "Network and Internet" window option, and choose the "Network and Sharing Center."
Step4
Double-click the "VPN" icon to begin troubleshooting the connection failure.
Step5
Fix an Error 734 by changing the VPN type to "pptp" and remove the "Require Data Encryption" option to regain access to the VPN network.
Step6
Change your VPN network from a wireless to a wired connection whenever you continue to receive an Error 800. This error is caused by failure of the wireless network to connect, in addition to being firewalled.
Step7
Uncheck the "Require Data Encryption" menu option whenever you receive Error 741. Error 741 is caused by your system not being able to support the currently defined encryption type. You may need to completely reconfigure the VPN to accommodate the system in question by using a different encryption set.
Step8
Make sure the VPN IP address matches what is supposed to connect your computer to the rest of the network. If the host or proxy computers are set to detect a different IP address you will need to reconfigure those computers instead.

Tips & Warnings

  • Invest in a dedicated VPN system for your company. Your VPN will allow you to access important files from across the Internet regardless of where your branch offices are. The VPN can also be used to host videoconferences and various other important forms of communication.
  • Never try to repair the VPN if you do not have administrative privileges or if you are not sure you know what you are doing. Failure to successfully repair a VPN can end up forcing the complete reconfiguration of the network.
