How to Change Windows Vista Themes and Skins

Whether for personal or office use, your computer is your own and should reflect who you are. The look and appearance of your operating system is almost as important as the programs that are on it. Therefore, it is necessary to be able to change the themes and skins of the programs you use in Windows Vista.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Windows Media Player
  • Windows Vista operating system

    Change your Desktop's Theme

  1. Step 1

    Go to the Control Panel from the Start menu.

  2. Step 2

    Select "Appearance and Personalization," then go to "Personalization."

  3. Step 3

    Select "Theme." There are several themes to choose from. Select the one you want and click "OK."

  4. Step 4

    Change your desktop's background image by right-clicking in an empty space on the desktop's background and click "Properties."

  5. Step 5

    Select the tab that says "Desktop."

  6. Step 6

    Choose an image from the drop-down list provided. There are a number of standard, default backgrounds provided.

  7. Step 7

    Choose an image stored on your computer as your background image by clicking "Browse."

  8. Step 8

    Find the location of the image you wish to use and select the image. When you are done, press "OK" or "Apply" to see what it looks like first.

  9. Change Windows Media Player Skins

  10. Step 1

    Right-click in an empty space towards the bottom of Windows Media Player first, to be sure the "Show Classic Menus" button is selected.

  11. Step 2

    Be sure you are in "Full Mode" before you change the skin. Right-click anywhere in Windows Media Player and click "Switch to Full Mode."

  12. Step 3

    Go to "View" and then "Skin Chooser."

  13. Step 4

    Go through the list of skins provided. Click each skin to see a preview.

  14. Step 5

    Download skins from the Internet by clicking "More Skins." You will be redirected to a web page where you can download more Windows Media Player skins.

  15. Step 6

    Delete a skin by going to the list of skins available in "Skin Chooser" and selecting the skin you wish to delete. Then select "Delete selected skin."

  • The basic appearance of programs, desktop, and other features in Windows Vista is called the theme. The basic appearance of features in Windows Media Player is called the skin.
  • You can change your themes or skins regularly, to reflect your current mood, an event in your life, or just to display a new picture you think is pretty. Changing your themes or skins regularly keeps things fresh and interesting.
