Cataract surgery is needed by some people to correct vision problems. Usually only one eye needs the operation, which removes proteins that have built up naturally over the years. Often cataract surgery isn't even needed, so you should talk to your doctor about it to see what your case requires.

Talk to a Doctor About Cataract Surgery

Step1
Talk to your eye doctor about the problems you've been having with your vision. The most common symptoms of a cataract are blurry and unfocused vision. You probably don't even know if you have a cataract unless you experience these problems.
Step2
Test your eye for several diseases and other conditions. Your doctor will do a field of vision test to check for glaucoma and other tests to see if you are having problems with your cornea. If you've ever had a previous eye injury, this is the time to tell your doctor about it.
Step3
Learn about your cataract. Doctors often describe the protein buildup as hard of soft. If you have a hard cataract, you might need to have it removed as soon as possible. A soft cataract can be less of a concern because it often won't bother your vision. Soft cataracts are easy to remove and do worsen over time, so your doctor may recommend its removal anyway.
Step4
Find out as much as you can about cataract surgery. Your doctor should explain to you exactly how your procedure would be done. You might have the choice of local anesthesia with mild sedatives or general anesthesia. Many patients who have anxiety about their eye being cut open choose to be put to sleep under general anesthesia.
Step5
Discus the risks of surgery with your doctor. You want to find out if the risk of complications is worth it. Most people have cataract surgery with few problems, although there is always the chance of infection with any type of surgery. The most common complication with cataract surgery is a buildup of protein behind your new lens. This protein is kind of like a second cataract, although it can be removed with laser surgery and doesn't develop until 1 to 2 years after your surgery.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure that both you and your doctor are convinced that cataract surgery is the best option for you. Many people live with mild vision problems due to cataracts.
  • Never be afraid to get a second opinion if you question your doctor's diagnosis and recommendation.
