Breast reduction surgery is a complicated medical procedure. It is of the utmost importance to select your surgeon with care in order to enjoy the best possible results. Beyond simply getting a referral from your regular physician, there are many things you can do to track down a skilled and certified breast reduction surgeon in your area. Read on to learn how to select a breast reduction surgeon.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Physician
  • Gynecologist
  1. Step 1

Make a list of plastic surgeons in your area that specialize in breast reduction. The surgeons you find on your own will complement the list of referrals you gathered from your physician, gynecologist and through discussions with other breast reduction surgery patients.

  2. Step 2

Contact the offices of each of the surgeons on your list and request referrals from satisfied patients, as well as before-and-after photos of procedures the surgeon has successfully completed. The more of each the office can provide, the better the chances that the surgeon is reputable.

  3. Step 3

Ensure that the surgeon you select has current certification from the appropriate medical board. The American Board of Medical Specialties, the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the American Board of Surgery, the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery and a variety of professional aesthetic medicine societies are among the organizations that provide certification to plastic surgeons.

  4. Step 4

Cull your list down to local surgeons who have a good track record in addition to board certification. Make an appointment to go in for a consultation with the doctor(s) of your choice.

  5. Step 5

Meet with each of the surgeons on your list to discuss your particular circumstances. Have each doctor walk you through the various surgical techniques available. Get a detailed plan from each doctor as to how she plans to treat you.

  6. Step 6

Connect with women who have had positive experiences with particular breast reduction surgeons in your area, and learn more about any surgeons you should avoid by participating in an Internet discussion forum. The message boards on the Breast Reduction 4 You website are a good place to start your search. See the Resources section below for a link.

  7. Step 7

Select the doctor you have the most confidence in. This will come from a combination of your personal rapport with the surgeon and the surgeon's professional history. Keep in mind that you are free to choose another doctor or seek a second opinion at any point.

Tips & Warnings
  • Start by asking your family doctor or gynecologist for a referral to a good plastic surgeon, but keep in mind that your regular physician should only be considered a starting point. Your usual doctors might also be able to tip you off on what surgeons to avoid.
  • Avoid any surgeons who do not have current board certification. If in doubt, ask the surgeon to provide documentation of his current status.
