How to Fundraise for a Cheerleading Squad

The job of fundraising is perhaps the most difficult part of being involved in a cheerleading team. In fact, this job should begin before the squad ever has its first practice. The funds collected from these efforts typically go to purchase uniforms, equipment and supplies. The more a team can fundraise, the less out of pocket expenses they will have as individuals.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Team newsletter
  • BBQ cookout foods
  • Team banner
  • Candy bars or other sellable items
  • Donation thank you card
  • Bank account
  • Sponsorship request letter

Fundraise for a Cheerleading Squad

Step1
Open a team bank account. This account should have at least three authorized users, for example: the coach, the assistant coach and the team mom. Many banks offer free checking accounts for sports teams.
Step2
Get sponsors for your team from local businesses or individuals. Most sponsorships are tax deductible (check with your cheer organization for specifics on non-profit tax status) and many local businesses owners will gladly sponsor a team for this reason. In return, their business logos should be placed in sports programs, on team banners or on warm up attire.
Step3
Ask for donations from individuals. Family members and friends may be willing to donate money to your team in exchange for some type of recognition. Usually a mention in the team newsletter or a special mention at the end of season awards banquet is enough to coerce family and friends to donate money.
Step4
Sell candy bars or other edible items door to door. Many fundraising companies will allow you to sell items before paying for them. This requires no money upfront and you usually repay the company half of what was earned in sales and keep the rest as profit.
Step5
Organize a cookout at your local grocery store. Because of high traffic in these areas, organizing a BBQ in the front is a great way to earn money for your squad. All you do is assign players and parents to cook at the grill and prepare small meals for customers.

Tips & Warnings

  • Get the permission of management before selling anything in front of a business establishment.
  • Sponsorships are almost a form of advertising for a business, so even if your team does not offer the business owner a tax deduction, the chances of getting sponsorships is still high.
  • Grocery stores will sometimes donate their food for your cookout. Ask them about donating when you ask permission to sell in front of their establishment.
  • Never sell door to door alone or at night.
