Many animals run away on the 4th of July. It is a very stressful time for them with all of the people and noise. Here are a few simple steps you can take to make sure your 4-legged family members have a safe and sane 4th.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • A pet
  • Love and understanding
Step1
First, your pet may start hearing the fireworks a week or two before the big event. If they have never heard noises like that before, they may get timid and scared, or even run and hide. If you are around and see your pet begin to frighten, try to distract them, play with a ball or a toy until the noises stop.
Step2
On the 4th, make sure to leave your pet indoors if you're not going to be home. Falling fireworks can be a danger to pets that are left outdoors. If you are home, make sure to leave a window so that your he/she can see outside and know that his/her "people" are safe.
Step3
While you are engaging in lighting fireworks, go inside occasionally and comfort your pet. Even if they have heard the noise before, more than likely they'll be scared. Give them some treats, a toy and a blanket. Make sure that they are comfortable. If you're not home, see if a friend or neighbor can stop by and check on your pet.
Step4
Should your pet escape your house or your yard, make sure to contact the nearest pet shelters. Many animals are brought in on the 5th of July after running away. However, if you follow these steps you should have a safe 4th of July for ALL your family members!

Tips & Warnings

  • Microchip your pet (if you haven't already) to ensure that in the event your pet does run away, you will be reunited quickly. Most shelters will scan the pets brought in to see if they have an owner and then contact you. If Microchipping is not an option, make sure your pet has a collar and tags.
  • This advise may not work for all pets. Obviously some are more timid than others and may still be frightened no matter how much comforting you may do.
  • Never have your pet outside or close the fireworks. It is dangerous for the people and for the pet as well.
