Wales has several distinguished universities including Cardiff, Aberystwyth, Bangor and Swansea. Scholarships are available to high calibre students and bursaries may be available too.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Step1
Visit the website of the university you plan to attend. If you are already there, you could also go to your local student advice office instead.
Step2
Look for the section of the website dealing with student finance.
Step3
Look for a page devoted to scholarships (see direct links in Resources). Many top universities offer scholarships to their students. Typically, these apply to certain degree courses only.
Step4
Check to see whether the subject you plan to study is eligible for any scholarships.
Step5
Review the list of conditions under which the scholarship is granted. Often a scholarship award is based on academic achievement only. Occasionally, other conditions, such as age or citizenship of a certain country, are attached too.
Step6
Decide whether you are eligible to apply.
Step7
Apply for the scholarship. You would usually be expected to at least fill in an application form and verify your academic record. In some cases, you may be required to sit examinations in order to qualify for the award.
Step8
Check the period over which you can expect the scholarship to be paid. Will it be a lump sum given up front, or will the money be paid in instalments over time?
Step9
Check whether there are any conditions you need to fulfil after you win the scholarship. For example, do you need to maintain an academic record of a certain quality?

Tips & Warnings

  • As well as scholarships, British students studying full-time at a Welsh university may be eligible for the Welsh National Bursary. This is a means-tested grant designed for students from lower income households. If you apply for financial support from the government, you should automatically be assessed for this benefit. Several universities also operate their own bursary schemes to benefit their poorer students.
  • Be aware that the university preferences you indicate on your UCAS form may affect your eligibility to receive a scholarship. Some universities which offer their own scholarships insist that you have chosen the university as a firm preference on your UCAS application.
  • In cases where multiple scholarships are available to you, holding one may preclude you from holding another.
