While the exact date of William Shakespeare’s birth is unknown, it is known he was born in Stratford Upon Avon. A fantastic example of Olde England in its own right, this Warwickshire town is one of the most important tourist spots in Britain--which of course means it can get very busy. The following steps aim to help you avoid the crowds and get the most out of your visit

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Check out the Stratford-Upon-Avon website (link below). This is the official site for tourist information.
Step2
Make an itinerary. There are plenty of things of things to see including Shakespeare’s birthplace and four other houses Shakes was connected with. Each house has a lot to see, as reflected by the entrance prices, so it’s not a case of just popping your head around the door.
Step3
Book your tickets. Tickets don’t need to be booked for looking around the sights unless you want to take a tour. The tour tickets are valid for one year.
Step4
Get away from Shakespeare. Stratford-Upon-Avon is a historic town in its own right and there are plenty of walks and museums that have nothing to do with Shakespeare, though they will give you insight into the early part of his life.
Step5
Go to the theatre. As well as an RSC Shakespearian company in the town, there is the Shakesperience--a show about the Bards life. Tickets need to be booked by phoning 01789 290 111.
Step6
Plan how to get there. When you go by car plan your route beforehand-- there are plenty of places to park when you arrive.
Step7
Go by train to Stratford station. Increasingly popular is the Shakespeare express--a steam train that takes you right into the station. Visit traveline for more information.
Step8
Book accommodation. If you want to stay more than a day there are plenty of places to stay in hostel, bed and breakfast and hotels. Check out the Stratford-Upon-Avon website for more information.

Tips & Warnings

  • Though the prices stay the same, the opening times can differ according to the season. The longest hours are during the summer.
  • This is one England’s of the most popular tourist attractions and as a result there are plenty of deals and discounts to be had with coach and train companies. Keep your eye out.
