In a lucid dream, the dreamer is aware that she is dreaming. The dreamer may be able to exert control over the dream realm, creating amazing environments and performing incredible tasks. There are several ways to induce lucidity whilst dreaming.
The mnemonic induction of lucid dreams (MILD) is commonly used to induce lucid dreams at will. The subject sets an intention, while falling asleep, to remember to recognize that he is dreaming or to remember to look for dream signs.
Step2
The wake-back-to-bed technique is often the easiest way to encourage a lucid dream. Go to sleep tired and awaken between five and six hours later. At this point, you must stay awake for a period between 60 and 90 minutes, during which you must focus all your thoughts and attention on lucid dreaming. You then fall asleep while telling yourself to realise when you are dreaming.
Step3
The wake-initiated lucid dream occurs when the sleeper enters REM sleep with unbroken self-awareness directly from the waking state. There are many techniques aimed at entering a WILD. The key to these techniques is recognising the hypnagogic stage, which is within the border of sleep and wakefulness. If a person stays aware in this stage, he will eventually enter the dream state while being fully aware that it is a dream.
Step4
Try meditating to strengthen your ability to experience lucid dreams. This makes you more susceptible to noticing small discrepancies in your surroundings.
Step5
Hypnotising yourself or having someone hypnotise you may also make it easier to enter the lucid dream state.
Step6
Use herbs such as Valerian, Mugwort, Mullein, Kava Kava, Dittany of Crete, St. Johns Wort, Calea Zacatechichi, Salvia Divinorum and Anise. Make sure you know more about these herbs before you use them. Some may have side-effects, especially if used together.
Tips & Warnings
A 60% success rate has been shown in research using the wake-back-to-bed technique. This is because the REM cycles get longer as the night goes on, and this technique takes advantage of the best REM cycle. Because this REM cycle is longer and deeper, gaining lucidity during this time may result in a longer lucid dream.
There is no information on detrimental effects of lucid dreaming. Most users report feelings of enlightenment and empowerment.
