Gardens in Europe contain small, earth-dwelling creatures originally from Germany called gnomes. This trend began in the 1800s and the love for these legendary garden creatures has spread to the United States and across the globe to backyard gardens everywhere. Selecting the proper garden gnome for a specific garden requires a little garden gnome history and knowledge of these dwarfish fellows.

From Quick Guide: Decorating with Garden Gnomes
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pick a garden gnome made from the original material, terra-cotta or more modern substances like resin, ceramic or concrete.

  2. Step 2

Recognize a true garden gnome by the beard, red hat and its maleness. The gnome is typically in a casual, carefree pose while napping or fishing.

  3. Step 3

Choose a classic terra-cotta version of a garden gnome, an animated traditional one or a seriously working garden gnome.

  4. Step 4

Catch a woodland garden gnome at night time since they are nocturnal creatures. Like dwarfs and trolls, gnomes are hard to catch due to their superhuman strengths and ability to foresee the future.

  5. Step 5

Find a garden gnome in one of 3 general types. Worker garden gnomes come with the proper tools to do their jobs like an axe for a mining gnome or a watering can for a gardening gnome. Leisure gnomes enjoy smoking pipes or relaxing with a fishing pole in hand. Culture garden gnomes play musical instruments or read books.

  6. Step 6

Examine the garden gnome before choosing to verify that the base of the gnome is weather resistant. Placing the gnome on concrete or stones in the garden will help, but the gnome must be weather resistant.

  7. Step 7

Pick from the many other types of garden gnomes that are comical or cartoon-like, that mimic other characters, or that contain solar lights to light a garden pathway.

Tips & Warnings
  • Prestigious garden clubs banned garden gnomes in the United Kingdom due to their working class association.
  • Beware of gnome hunters that steal garden gnomes and ship them around the world on wild adventures.
