Spending time in the garden after a long day at work and a hectic commute is the perfect way to unwind and reduce stress. Placing functional multi-purpose furniture pieces throughout the garden and backyard areas invites communing with nature and enjoying the fragrant roses on the trellis or dinner beneath a shower of sunflowers.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look for multi-purpose garden furniture in woods like teak, cedar and oak. Garden furniture is also made of tropical bamboo, wicker and metals such as aluminum.

  2. Step 2

Choose a piece of garden furniture that becomes part of the garden itself. Buy an arbor with built-in benches or a seat with planter boxes on both sides from a garden supply center.

  3. Step 3

Find a store that advertises patio or deck furniture. Their wide selections of outdoor furniture include multi-purpose pieces like glider benches.

  4. Step 4

Buy a multi-purpose potting bench. This functional garden item serves as a potter's tool and a serving cart.

  5. Step 5

Shop in Amish country to find an arbor or screened in gazebo to place in the backyard garden. Ask an Amish artisan to make a multi-purpose arbor/gazebo where the Concord grape vines or yellow roses climb around the arbor and form a unique gazebo shape.

  6. Step 6

Check out the local pool store for outdoor bar equipment. Pools shops that perform architectural design and installations have good suppliers of outdoor deck and pool multi-purpose storage benches, refrigerators and dining room furniture.

  7. Step 7

Place a tiki bar in the garden with lights and lanterns for a fun multi-purpose piece. The bar sets come with bar stools for guests to sit, a bar bench with storage and serving counter, and a grass or canopy cover for weather protection.

  8. Step 8

Set up a bamboo or willow lattice screen near a private area of the garden. These lovely screens add ambiance to a romantic dining nook and create privacy between the garden and high traffic areas.

Tips & Warnings
  • Get a bargain by purchasing multi-purpose furniture instead of the individual pieces.
  • Buy multi-purpose pieces that has a self-contained planter.
