Summer truly begins when it is time to serve meals outdoors. Whether there are outdoor cooking facilities or not, moving the dining room outside to the garden is a great way to celebrate the arrival of summer blossoms and warm nights with friends and family.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide whether the dining area is for romantic evening dinners with the wife, Sunday brunch with family and friends, or late night cocktail parties on Friday evenings. This helps determine where the dining room furniture is best suited in the garden.

  2. Step 2

Consider the time of day most guests will sit down to eat and place the dining room furniture so they will not have the sun in their eyes.

  3. Step 3

Pick a place in the garden that is cozy, protected from the elements such as wind and rain and has a comfortable feel where dining guests can relax.

  4. Step 4

Set up the dining room furniture next to a wall of sunflowers that provide shade and a formal, casual enclosure. Create a sense of privacy in the choice of garden dining area.

  5. Step 5

Select an area of the garden that is near the kitchen or outdoor cooking area so there is minimal distance to carry food and place settings.

  6. Step 6

Place a long dining room table near a garden area with built-in seating, if available, to serve large numbers of people and give dual purpose to an existing piece of outdoor furniture. Purchase a long bench for the other side of the table and serve dinner for 10.

  7. Step 7

Set the dining room furniture on gravel, individual stones or a cement walkway for a secure footing.

  8. Step 8

Choose an area in the garden away from stagnant water sources that grow mosquitoes. Minimizing exposure to mosquitoes is the best prevention for West Nile virus.

  9. Step 9

Buy a dining room table with a canopy if direct sunlight is a concern or place the dining room furniture under an ornamental tree in the garden for a bit of shade.

Tips & Warnings
  • Serve breakfast, lunch or dinner in the garden. No meal is taboo as an outdoor dining experience.
  • Avoid placing the dining room furniture near flowers that could attract dinner-loving bees.
