How to Prepare for the SAT Mathematics Section

Rate: (1 Ratings)

The mathematics section of the SAT test contains 2 types of questions: 44 multiple-choice questions and 10 student-produced response questions. Student-produced response questions don't provide any answers for you to choose from. Instead, you use an answer sheet to enter your response into a grid. You have 70 minutes to complete the entire section.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
Remember that you don't need to memorize any formulas for the test. The test book has a list of commonly used formulas at the beginning of the section.
Step2
Read test problems carefully. Identify what the question is asking.
Step3
Practice with scratch paper. You can use your SAT test book as scratch paper during the actual test.
Step4
Bring a calculator for the mathematics questions. Approved calculators include graphing, scientific and 4-function calculators.
Step5
Use a list of advanced topics to determine what to study. Many SAT test websites have a thorough list of the topics included in the mathematics section.
Step6
Learn to use the process of elimination. If you don't know the answer to a multiple-choice question, dismiss the answers that you know are not correct. You improve your chances of selecting the right response.
Step7
Purchase a good SAT study guide. Many guides will provide you with sample questions and answers so you become familiar with the format of the questions and the directions. This is especially important for the student-produced response question section. Study guides also provide you with additional test taking strategies.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice answering questions under timed circumstances to reduce any additional stress during test day.
