Start the weekend on Thursday instead of Friday to save money. Leaving on Thursday will allow much cheaper prices on plane tickets, hotel rooms, rental cars and vacation packages.

      • 2

Avoid traveling on holiday weekends. Prices are raised and things are booked early and sold out on weekends such as Memorial Day, Thanksgiving and Labor Day.

      • 3

Consider traveling last minute. Although it may be hard to plan, especially if children are involved, many places such as hotels and airlines offer great discounted rates for last minute bookings.

      • 4

Find cheap things to do. Some of these may include national or state parks, amusement parks, state fairs and camping. Save even more money by finding something nearby within driving distance, instead of flying.

      • 5

Have a relaxing weekend by getting much rest. Don't cram a lot of things to do into a weekend trip. Not only will this save money, but it will offer a refreshing pick-up and not find the traveler more tired after the trip than before. Spend the weekend in the woods reading a novel, or basking in the sun.

Travel to places during downtimes. Destinations such as the Caribbean and ski resorts offer many fun activities during the summer which is not peak traveling time. Prices will be much lower during these times.

    Tips & Warnings

I'm totally into saving money on trips yet having a great time. Thanks for the tips. I will be checking some last minutes hotel deals on Thursdays or 'less expensive' days to save a few bucks.

Quick getaways are great! I used to do it a lot, when my family was "younger". Spontaneity is also a lot of fun. Often, following these tips won't cost you anymore than staying at home, or going to dinner and a movie.
