How to Stay Motivated in School

Students who are not gifted with total recall (most students) devote nights of missed sleep and years of hard work to complete the task. Getting through school requires more than work, though. It takes mastery of educational skills and perseverance through an onslaught of challenges. Incorporating the skills into everyday life makes it easier to become a successful student. Staying motivated in schoolwork requires encouragement and help.

Instructions

    • 1

Talk with a mentor. Spend time with a positive person who can inspire you. That person could be a neighbor, teacher or anyone else who can cheer you on.

    • 2

Listen to the advice of others who mastered what you are trying to become. Ask role models what advice they can give you. Tap into the wisdom that older people have; the advice will floor you.

    • 3

Stay positive to become the type of person people like to be around. Reflect on a good time in your life when life gets you down. Listen to music, look at art and laugh at anything that amuses you. This can work wonders with the mood.

    • 4

Pretend that you have a cheering section that follows you daily. Imagine them roaring enthusiastically when they see you do something great. Tell yourself, "You can do it" and "I have faith in you," because you will not get pep talks from a visible cheering section throughout the day.

    • 5

Face life fearlessly. Decide to pay now rather than later when facing challenges. Realize that the current workload may seem impossible, but the consequences of slacking off may be even greater. Visualize the temporary sacrifice paying off in long-term dividends.

    • 6

Forgive yourself for making mistakes, learn from those mistakes and try again. Examine what you did wrong so you can improve next time. Move on.

    • 7

Forgive others for their mistakes so you can think clearly. Realize that most offenses are unintentional.

Tips & Warnings

  • The mentor/mentee relationship does not have to consume much time. If this person can give just one piece of wisdom that saves you years of work, then you will definitely thank yourself and the mentor later.

  • Happy people are like magnets of positive energy that attract other positive people. Negativity repels people. Life can be challenging, but others do not need to know when you have taken a hit.

  • Dwelling on past mistakes hinders progress.
