Whether you are new to the sport of fishing or an old hand, mastering the basics will undoubtedly increase your pleasure and decrease some of the frustration that you may encounter while passing the time with a hook and a line. Tying a good knot should be considered one of the most important things to learn before making that first cast. Tying an Improved Cinch Knot is a requirement for all good fishermen.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fishing rod
  • Fishing line
  • Terminal tackle (such as hooks, lures and fast clips)
  • Nail clippers (or scissors)
  1. Step 1

Hold your terminal tackle (hook, lure or fast clip) in your left hand, and in your right, the line. Take the end of the line (called the tag end) and insert and pull it through the eye hole of the terminal tackle you are using.

  2. Step 2

Pull the end of the line through the eye until you have approximately 12 to 16 inches of line from the tag end to the eye.

  3. Step 3

Twist the terminal tackle in your left hand while holding both the line and the tag end with your right hand. The line should be wrapping around itself making loops. Continue until 4 to 5 loops (revolutions) have been made by the tag end of the line wrapping around the spool end of the line.

  4. Step 4

Complete 4 to 5 loops, then take the tag end of the line and thread it through the first loop, or the loop that is the closest to the terminal tackle eye.

  5. Step 5

Take the tag end and then pass it through the secondary loop that was created when you put it through the first loop above the eye.

  6. Step 6

Pull the tag end slowly but firmly through the first loop as the rest of the loops are tightening down or clinching against the spool line and cinching down onto the eye of the terminal tackle.

  7. Step 7

Take a nail clipper and trim off the excess tag line to about an eighth of an inch of the terminal tackle eye once you have pulled the tag end as tight as it will go.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't let the loops cross over each other as this will actually weaken the line. They should be snugged up against one another in individual rows.
  • In cold weather, wear thin surgical gloves. This will help keep your hands and fingers warm while still allowing the dexterity needed for tying knots.
  • Before going fishing, make sure you check with your state or local Department of Natural Resources (or applicable governing body) to purchase or determine if you must purchase a fishing license.
