Step 1
Determine what type of writer you need. There are many different types of freelance writers. Copywriters can write ads, brochures and other forms of business writing. Technical writers can write manuals and white papers.
-
Step 2
Figure out what you would like the writer to write. Know how big the project is, how many pages or words you need, when your deadline is and what the subject is. Have a basic idea so you can pitch it to prospective writers. They can then give you an estimate on price that you can compare with others.
-
Step 3
Ask colleagues and friends if they can suggest a writer for your project. Knowing someone who has used a writer before can make it easier to know what kind of work the writer does.
-
Step 4
Search online for freelance writers. There are many websites where you can post your project and have writers bid on it. Keep in mind that you may be getting a writer who has no experience, may not speak your language and may not be qualified for your project. This is a chance you take when hiring from a bidding site.
-
Step 5
Look at samples of a writer's previous work, if possible. Sometimes work done by a writer cannot be used as a sample because of an agreement with other clients.
-
Step 6
Take a chance on a writer. If you find a writer you like, but they don't have a lot of experience with projects like yours, hire them for a smaller project or a small portion of a big project. This will give you an example of their style and quality. A good writer can write just about anything, so previous experience in a certain area may not be needed.
-
Step 7
Hire a writer you can work with. If you need a freelance writer now, chances are you will need one again in the future. Hire a good writer to whom you will want to send future projects. This will save you hiring frustrations later.
-
Step 8
Sign a contract with the writer. State the project details and deadlines clearly ion the contract. If you trust the writer, you will still need to at least give written details of how you want the project completed. Save a copy for yourself so no one loses track of what you need.
