Step 1
Choose a discipline. From tae kwon do and kick boxing to kung fu and classic karate, there are many different martial arts systems students can try. There may be a limited choice of disciplines available in your area, so if you want to attend courses in person, your choice may be narrowed before you begin.
-
Step 2
Choose a school. Your local dojo, or martial-arts school, is a good place to start. Check your local directory listing or the Internet for the school nearest you. You may also opt to purchase a DVD or book so you can learn your chosen discipline in the privacy of your home.
-
Step 3
Learn the basics. Your instructor will guide you in the basic forms, or "katas," you need to practice. You must learn the fundamentals before you can spar (fight) or advance beyond the beginner level.
-
Step 4
Practice, practice, practice. The process of obtaining a black belt takes years of hard work and practice. Only experience can prepare you for the challenge of earning your black belt.
-
Step 5
Earn intermediate belts. Depending on the discipline, you will earn several belts before you can become a candidate for a black belt. You earn belts by exhibiting mastery in the appropriate concepts. Typical colors are white, yellow, orange, purple, green, blue and brown. Graduated degree distinctions may exist within the colors.

Step 6
Take a black belt candidate class. This class prepares you for the black belt exam, which is the final step required to earn a black belt.
