How to Get Finance Jobs

Finance jobs pay well and are plentiful, even when overall economic activity dips. That doesn't mean they are easy to get, though. You still have to know what area in finance fits best with your background and experience and where to find those finance jobs. Looking for the right finance job is an exercise in patience and persistence but one that pays off very well in the end.

1. Determine if finance is the right career for you. Finance jobs require at least a bachelor's degree in finance or business administration, exceptional math and communication skills and an unquenchable thirst for success. Also, decide what area of finance interests you the most.

2. Prepare a resume and cover letter summarizing your employment history, accomplishments and career goals. Remember to edit it a few times; employers will toss your resume in the trash if they see even one error.

3. Talk to friends or colleagues who work in finance or know people who work in finance. Try cold-calling financial companies and ask if they are open to having an informational interview with you. Actions like this show initiative.

4. Scour the Internet for finance job listings. Newspaper websites, web portals like Monster and Career Builder and corporate websites all are good places to look.

5. Attend some career fairs. Remember to dress professionally, bring several copies of your resume and prepare a sales pitch--after all, you are selling yourself.

6. Secure part-time or temporary employment or perhaps an internship in finance while you seek finance jobs. Even if your current job isn't your dream job, employers prefer candidates who work continuously.

7. Follow up each lead and thank anyone who assists you in your job search. Employers will see you in a favorable light because of your graciousness.
