The kitchen is often said to be the heart of the home. Designing a kitchen is an exciting opportunity to bring your personality into your home and create a room where you can feel at home in. Whether you are starting out a kitchen from scratch or you are working with existing appliances and cabinetry, a kitchen makeover can increase the value of your home and add a spark to your personal menus.

From Quick Guide: Room by Room Design: Kitchen
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine the space that you are working with. Are you starting out from scratch with brand-new construction, or are you renovating or redecorating an old kitchen? You will have different challenges depending on your starting ground.

  2. Step 2

Find your inspiration. Are you an aspiring chef, or do you have a kitchen because you know that every home has to have one? Is your idea of kitchen necessities a phone stand complete with delivery menus? Are you planning on spending a majority of your day in there?

  3. Step 3

Plan your budget. Before you get started picking out your dream appliances and other kitchen goodies, you need to know how much you can spend. You need to prioritize purchases that you need to make versus the ones that you want to make.

  4. Step 4

Decide on your layout. How do you want your kitchen to flow? Think about how you use the kitchen in an everyday scenario. What makes the most sense where? You don't have to follow the traditional work triangle if that doesn't make sense for you and your needs. The triangle is formed by the location of the sink, stove and refrigerator.

  5. Step 5

Get some help. The Internet is full of online programs that you can use to design your kitchen. You can add appliances, specify color choices and virtually install lighting. Websites such as Kitchens, HGTV Kitchen Design and Kitchen Designer Ideas are just a few online resources. You can also take online quizzes to help you determine your style, wants and needs.

  6. Step 6

Go shopping. Once you've figured out your budget, planned your layout and determined your color scheme, you are ready to see how to make your kitchen the masterpiece that you deserve. You can go to hardware stores, design showrooms, appliance stores and your friends' homes to get ideas on what you want in your kitchen and what you want it to really look like.
