DVDs are the most common media format for watching movies, but you still have some VHS tapes sitting on your shelves and in boxes in your garage. Just because the technology has moved on from VHS doesn't mean that the tapes are worthless. Purchasing a DVD/VCR combo player can solve your media-watching needs. The hard part is deciding which player to buy.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine the most important thing to you when looking at a DVD/VCR combo player. Is it price, features/functions, brand name or availability? All things being equal, you need to pick out the top item that will make one player look more favorable than the others. Make a checklist and pick your top three items that mean the most to you.

  2. Step 2

Read customer reviews. You can go to websites such as Amazon, Consumer Reports and CNET to read what real people say about the players. This sort of unbiased review can be an invaluable resource to find out how the product really works and what sorts of glitches to expect.

  3. Step 3

Use the information at your fingertips. Websites such as Best Buy and CompUSA have a comparison feature available for the products that they sell. You check the box beside the player that you want to compare, and a list of players will be displayed along with all of the criteria. It is a great way to do a side-by-side comparison of the products.

  4. Step 4

Talk to a sales associate at an electronics store. A great way to find out about products and their features and benefits is to talk to a live person. In this day and age of the Internet being such an information source, people forget to leave their houses and go to the store. You may be surprised what you can learn from asking a real person questions.
