A garden fountain adds a touch of elegance to any setting. You can buy a freestanding fountain or wall-mounted fountain in a variety of materials including resin, cement, wood, pottery, metal or rock, or you could make a unique garden water fountain yourself. Here are some things to consider when choosing a garden water fountain.

From Quick Guide: Water Garden Fountains 101
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose an area for your new garden water fountain. There are solar models that do not need electricity to run, but most larger fountains require an electrical source nearby.

  2. Step 2

Determine the size of your water fountain. If you have a large garden and the fountain is to be a focal point, choose a large fountain. If your fountain will be for a patio seating area or for a wall, a smaller water fountain would be better.

  3. Step 3

Select a water fountain that will go with the type of garden you have. Maybe you have an informal and colorful English cottage garden or maybe your garden is more formal and modern. Choose a water fountain that will fit with your style of garden.

  4. Step 4

Consider your budget. You can have an inexpensive ready-to-plug-in model or an elaborate custom sculpture that costs thousands of dollars and requires expensive installation.

  5. Step 5

Think about the maintenance involved when choosing a fountain. Ask about winter maintenance: does it need to be drained and brought indoors, or can it withstand a heavy freeze? Ask for all the details before you decide, and be sure it fits with the level of maintenance you're willing to provide.

  6. Step 6

Decide if you want to personalize your water fountain. You may wish to incorporate special or unusual rocks and pebbles gathered from trips or shells and driftwood from the beach. Floating glass balls, statues, water plants or any number of other items can make a fountain a truly beautiful addition to your garden. Be sure your fountain can accommodate any special requirements.
