Step 1
Search in shelters and local pounds. Unless you have your heart set on a new puppy, check around for an older dog that needs a home. Adopting an older dog will give you all of the love and devotion, without having to worry about house training and chewed shoes.
-
Step 2
Think high and low. High-energy dogs are best left to the suburbanites. Low- to medium-energy dogs are best for an apartment. Choosing a dog for an apartment means that you need to find a breed that can be enclosed daily and can run off energy on daily walks and trips to the park. See the Resources below for a list of high- and low-energy dogs.

Step 3
Find a breed that suits you. If you are an outdoor fanatic, choose a dog that will enjoy those things with you. For those who want long stretches of quiet time, get one that will enjoy it. For every breed of human, there is a breed of dog.

Step 4
Get prepared before you bring the pooch home. No matter which dog you choose, being prepared to have an apartment dog will help ease the animal into a life in an apartment. Begin with a sturdy leash for frequent walks, plenty of water and treats for training and lots of toys to keep them occupied.
