Whether you've got a new puppy or an old dog that needs to be reminded who's boss, a dog training collar could be the solution you are looking for. Before you run out and buy the first dog training collar you can find, stop and think about how you want to train your dog. Unfortunately, training a dog isn't just about the collar.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Talk with your veterinarian or breeder about the use and benefits of different collars, and ask which one they recommend for your dog. Be familiar with the options before you make a decision: There are electronic collars, pinch collars, choke chains, plain buckle collars, martingale collars, limited choke collars, head collar, pronged collars and no-bark collars.

  2. Step 2

Consider the method of training you will be able to perform. It is of no use to buy a collar for a specific type of training if you don't think you will be successful implementing that type of program.

  3. Step 3

Sign up for a dog obedience class. Attending a class will help you learn the proper way to train your dog and use the collar. Your instructor can recommend a particular type of collar.

  4. Step 4

Go to a pet store and talk with a sales associate. The store employees should be familiar with the dog training collars and can discuss the pros and cons of each with you so that you can make an informed decision.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't buy a collar without knowing what it's for and how to use it. Some training collars can be detrimental to your dog's health if used incorrectly.
