How to Be a Friend

A good friend is always a precious gift, but true friendship takes work. We're all familiar with people we meet, think we connect with and then end up chasing them to keep the friendship going. The time you invest in a good friendship brings rewards far beyond the work that goes into building and maintaining it.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Be the best listener your good friend has ever had. True friendship is an equal give and take. Ask how things are going and pay close attention to what your friend says. Make sure the effort is returned.
Step2
Advise, but hold judgment. It can be tough when you see a good friend getting into trouble. But trying to control a person isn't how a true friend behaves. Let your friend make mistakes but make it clear how you feel.
Step3
Spend lots of quality time with your friend. It takes time to connect with someone. Do things you each enjoy and be open to new experiences.
Step4
Embrace your differences. Learn about your friend's culture and family. Let the way someone else approaches life open doors to new experiences. Always keep an open mind when your friend tells you about something new they want to try, and support them.
Step5
Be generous and thoughtful. Whenever you come across an article, book or website you think will interest your friend, let them know about it. Pick up that T-shirt you find on sale in their favorite color, and always visit friends when they are sick or depressed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Beware of what might seem like innocent teasing. A joke at a friend's expense can be more hurtful than you think.
  • Don't be afraid to end a friendship with someone who doesn't make any effort to be a good friend. You deserve someone who's as dedicated to building a true friendship as you are.

on 12/26/2007 Time is key!! That is a good point. Usually it doesn't feel like work, but once in awhile you may have to do things you don't necessarily feel like doing. Hopefully your friend will do the same for you!
