Avoid job loss while you can

The prospect of being laid off can be overwhelming and cause a lot of stress. It's easy to think that you have no control over layoffs and that you simply have to wait to see if it happens. The truth, though, is that there are many things you can do to avoid a layoff. By taking precautionary measures, you have a much greater chance of staying with your company, even when it is downsizing.

Instructions

    • 1

Understand that even when a company is in the midst of layoffs, very rarely will it lay off all of its employees. Instead, company management will pick and choose who is the most valuable and who will be the greatest benefit to them when they are downsizing.

    • 2

Strive to be the best employee possible. Be the person who arrives early and stays late. Volunteer for projects and take on extra responsibilities. Do your work quickly and do it well.

    • 3

Do your best to be known as a positive and pleasant employee. Help to build morale within the company, especially during this time of uncertainty.

    • 4

Increase your worth to your employer by improving your skills. Take night classes or get a certification in a new area. Show your boss that you have more skills to offer and that you're willing to go the extra mile.

    • 5

Realize that companies rarely pick people randomly for a layoff. Employers are looking for performance and value in their employees and also how each individual fits into the company structure. If you're known as a troublemaker, you're more likely to be let go.

    • 6

If you feel a layoff is imminent, offer to renegotiate your salary, benefits and position. Being willing to take a pay cut, accept a reduction in benefits or move to a different job within the company may mean that you can stay employed.

    • 7

Tell your boss that your job is important to you and you want to do whatever it takes to keep it. Respectfully listen to suggestions and make every effort to improve on weaknesses. Be the employee that your company needs and they will want to keep you for years to come.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep a positive attitude even when the possibility of layoffs is looming. Employers notice which people cave under pressure and which ones stay strong.

  • Do your best to build a relationship with your superiors. If you are well liked, you will be remembered and the company will work harder to keep your job intact.
