The estimated 768 million airline travelers boarding planes this year face the usual obstacles: delays, crowded flights, heightened security measures … and germs. Being in such close quarters with people who may have colds or even the flu greatly increases one's chances of developing some type of ailment. But just a few simple steps can help to avoid ailments and ensure a smooth flight.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Stay hydrated during your flight by drinking bottled water or juices. Limit or totally avoid coffee, tea, alcohol or caffeinated soft drinks.
Step2
Wash your hands after touching surfaces that might have germs such as door handles, toilet seats and magazines. Clean surfaces with an antibacterial wipe before touching.
Step3
Fly first class or business travel whenever possible. The seats are farther apart, limiting contact with other passengers who may be sick.
Step4
Take extra doses of vitamin C to help your immune system resist germs more. Consider immune-strengthening herbs such as echinachea.
Step5
Refrain from booking flights during flu season, if possible. Keep note of news reports about potential outbreaks that might be carried by other passengers.
Step6
Avoid the threat of blood clots developing on long flights by stretching and walking around, when possible. If you are at high risk for developing clots, consult with your doctor about prescribing compression socks.

Tips & Warnings

  • Carry these basic health care items while traveling: pain relievers, decongestants, cough medicine, throat lozenges, antacid, antibiotic ointment, bandages and antidiarrheal medicine.
  • Consult with your physician before flying. Discuss any health care concerns or ailments you currently have.
  • Ask your physician before taking any herbal concoctions. These can potentially contradict any medications you are taking.
