Step 1
Find out the areas with heavily decorated houses. Most towns and cities will have neighborhoods that are known for elaborately decorated homes. If you are new to an area, ask your neighbors and others in the area for suggestions.
-
Step 2
Look in the local newspapers and magazines. During the holiday season, many papers feature nicely decorated homes and neighborhoods. You can plan your route before the actual night that you look at lights.
-
Step 3
Gather your family and pick an evening that you all want to look at lights. Looking at lights is a great way to end Christmas Eve or Christmas Day evening activities.
-
Step 4
Make an entire night out of looking at Christmas lights by having a nice dinner and waiting until dark before leaving your house. You could also go out to eat and look at lights before going home.
-
Step 5
Plan the trip so that you get to see the most elaborate houses last.
-
Step 6
Listen to Christmas music while driving in your car looking at Christmas lights. This will make for a more festive mood.

on 10/29/2007 I would change Step 1 to include checking websites like the Tacky Light Tour (http://www.tackylighttour.com) to find the areas with heavily decorated houses. They make it even easier with interactive maps and printable driving directions.
