Step 1
Choose kid-friendly utensils. Using brightly colored silicon utensils helps children avoid unintentional burns while making the kitchen a bright, friendly place.
-
Step 2
Let the children choose their recipes. Allowing the kids a voice in what they are going to cook encourages their participation in the kitchen and their pride in their culinary accomplishments.
-
Step 3
Stirring (supervised) is a job even small children can do. Stand your little one on a chair and watch carefully while they stir anything from cookie dough to soup.
-
Step 4
Breaking eggs is a job kids of all ages enjoy. Make sure to pick any bits of eggshell out of the bowl before it's too late.
-
Step 5
Increase their responsibilities in the kitchen gradually. Younger children can measure and add ingredients with a little help and may eventually graduate to chopping.
-
Step 6
Clean up together. Working together to clean up the kitchen when the cooking is done can be as much fun as making the mess initially.
-
Step 7
Write your own cookbook. Have the kids work together to decorate it with pictures of their favorites. A notebook that includes recipes everyone has cooked and enjoyed may eventually become a family treasure.
