How to Avoid Sun Poisoning

Sun poisoning is caused by over-exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (or UV) rays. Mild symptoms can include patches of red, itchy skin. Mild cases often resemble sunburn but should be treated immediately, as some cases are life threatening. Following these common-sense steps will ensure the safety of your skin.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 15
  • Hat with a large brim
  • UV Protective Swimwear

Step1
Avoid sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when UV rays reach their highest levels. Early morning and late afternoon hours are safest for outdoor activities. This is because the sun is not directly overhead, and fewer UV rays filter through the atmosphere.
Step2
Stay in the shade whenever possible. The less time your skin is exposed to direct sunlight, the better your chances of avoiding sun poisoning.
Step3
Use sunscreen with a SPF rating of at least 15. Re-apply sunscreen every 2 hours. Apply more often if you are exerting yourself, because even "sweat-proof" sunscreen looses its effectiveness over time. Water also reduces sunscreen's protection. Follow the directions and recommendations on the label.
Step4
Wear protective clothing, including hats and beach wraps. Many swimwear companies now offer lines of beach clothing especially designed for use in water, while still protecting your skin from harmful UV rays.

Tips & Warnings

  • Children are especially at risk and rarely ask for more sunscreen, so pay close attention to their exposure.
  • Even on a cloudy day, UV rays are dangerous.
