Step 1
Purchase the absolute best pair you can afford. Skimp on something else in the sewing box, but not the scissors.
-
Step 2
Decide if you want straight scissors or bent-handle scissors that are commonly called shears.
-
Step 3
Choose what size blade you want. Blades are usually four, five or six inches in length.
-
Step 4
Determine how heavy a pair of scissors you want. A lightweight pair will work fine for most fabrics, but if you are going to be cutting fabrics such as denim, consider a heavier pair. The lighter the scissors, the less tired your hand will be.
-
Step 5
Make sure the scissors fits your hand comfortably. If you are left-handed, buy a pair of lefty scissors. They are harder to find, but they are available.
-
Step 6
Visit with the staff at fabric stores to see which scissors they recommend. Also note which scissors they use to cut fabric for their customers. Ask to pick up their scissors or shears and use them.
-
Step 7
Cut only fabric with your sewing scissors. If necessary hide your sewing scissors from the rest of your family so they don't use them. Cutting anything but fabric will quickly dull your shears.
