Instructions

    • 1

Choose a container for your topiary. A large clay flower pot will work well or a decorative urn makes an even more dramatic statement. To prevent tipping, weigh down the container with sand or rocks.

    • 2

Purchase three nice round pumpkins in graduated sizes. The largest one needs to fit snugly in the container you have chosen.

    • 3

Cut the top off of the largest pumpkin. It will serve as the base for your topiary. Prepare the middle-sized pumpkin in the same way. Then, cut a hole in the bottom so it will rest securely on the base pumpkin. Leave the stem intact on the smallest pumpkin, cutting a hole only in the bottom. It will rest on the middle-sized pumpkin and serve as the top of the topiary.

    • 4

Clean out the centers of all three pumpkins as you normally would in preparing a jack-o-lantern.

    • 5

Make holes in random patterns in all three pumpkins using a drill with a 5/16-inch drill bit. For larger holes you can use an apple corer.

    • 6

Place the largest pumpkin in the container. Insert a 100-count strand of twinkle lights through one of the larger holes in the base. As you stack the pumpkins, spread the lights out evenly through all three using florist tape to secure. You can also use a heavy-duty adhesive between each pumpkin to stabilize the topiary.

    • 7

Embellish the base of your topiary with mini-pumpkins, branches of leaves, moss, and dried or silk flowers. Use a glue gun if necessary.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure to drill enough holes in the pumpkins for the light to shine through attractively.
