Learn about the different traditions that exist in Wicca. This helps you understand the coven' s approach. A coven that follows the Dianic tradition, for example, places emphasis on the goddess and may only allow women to join. Identify practices you're uncomfortable with and ask coven members if they follow them.

Start with covens in your area. Visit the Witch Vox site to learn about other Wiccans in your town who belong to covens. Ask at occult bookstores and check bulletin boards at cafes and meditation centers for pagan holiday celebrations. Someone there may know of a local coven.

      • 3

Participate in online discussion forums to find out about other Wiccans' experiences with covens. Visit the Wicca Forums and ask about local covens. They also post information about events where you can meet coven members.

      • 4

Check out coven websites. This gives you an idea how covens operate. Online Wiccan Rituals is an open online coven run through Yahoo! Groups. They perform rituals through chat and have been online since 2001.

Start your own coven. Read "Wicca Covens: How to Start and Organize Your Own" by Judy Harrow. It's rated highly on Amazon.com. Examining coven websites gives you ideas about your own. Find people who've been Wiccans for a long time to advise you.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Take your time when looking for a coven. Practice as a solitary in the meantime and explore how you want to practice Wicca in your Book of Shadows.

    • Collaborate with others when starting your own coven. Remember you're a group and everyone profits from having a hand in its creation.

I personally would never join (or start) a coven.... usually too much drama. We have our "clan" who meets regularly for rituals, etc and all of us agree to not call it a coven. Just a personal opinion.
