If you have some attic space you'd like to convert into living space, you first should install a kneewall or two. This will create a vertical wall to give the attic a finished look and will also supply storage space. With a few tools, you can install a kneewall in no time.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Check rafters where the kneewall is to be installed by placing a level across edges. A level plane is required for the top plate of the kneewall. If needed, shim along edge of rafters to raise low spots.

  2. Step 2

Use a chalk line to mark the floor and rafters where you will install the kneewall. Measure the distance between end rafters and cut two 2-by-4's for the bottom and top plates of kneewall.

  3. Step 3

Cut 2-by-4's for kneewall studs. (How many you need will depend on how far apart you are spacing the studs, either 16 inches or 24 inches apart on center.) Mark the rafter angle on top of one stud, and use as a template to cut the remaining studs. Nail studs to the bottom and top plates.

  4. Step 4

Set the kneewall in place. Check the plumb with a level and shim, where and if needed.

  5. Step 5

Install the kneewall by nailing the top and bottom plates to floor and rafters. Add insulation between studs. Insulation may be held up by twine or the edges of the paper can be stapled to the studs.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is not necessary to install insulation both between the rafters behind the kneewall and between the studs of the kneewall. Either way is acceptable.

on 8/6/2009 This helps frame up a kneewall but what about drywalling one? Are non 90 degree angels done differently? I assume you start with the ceiling and work down? Do you leave any type of spacing at the angle joints or are those up tight?
