Children love carving pumpkins at Halloween. It's fun to create scary or funny faces. With the help of an adult, children can help carve pumpkin faces safely.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pumpkin
  • Child-safe serrated knife
  • Table cloth or old newspaper
  1. Step 1

Find a pumpkin with a smooth surface. Make sure it is free from blemishes and mold.

  2. Step 2

Cover a tabletop with a plastic table cloth or with old newspapers.

  3. Step 3

Give the child a permanent black marker to draw a face on the pumpkin. Add a mouth, nose and eyes. Make sure the facial features are large enough to cut out easily.

  4. Step 4

Remove the top of the pumpkin by carving around the stem. Use a child-safe serrated knife with ridges on both sides. The child should cut deep enough to reach the hollow area inside of the pumpkin. Pull the top off the pumpkin by grasping the stem firmly. Set aside.

  5. Step 5

Put your hand inside the pumpkin and remove all the stringy flesh and seeds. You may need a spoon to separate all the string from the sides of the pumpkin.

  6. Step 6

Carve the eyes, nose and mouth along the black outline with the child-safe serrated knife. Push the features into the pumpkin and remove by hand.

  7. Step 7

Place a tea light candle inside the carved pumpkin. Have an adult light the candle. Place the top back on the pumpkin.
