How to Use Yahoo! Messenger to Make Local and International Calls

With Yahoo! Messenger, you can call anywhere in the world using a computer with an Internet connection. Just follow these steps

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Download Yahoo! Messenger version 7.5 or higher and install, following prompts.

  2. Step 2

    Open Yahoo! Messenger. Sign up for a new account or sign in to your existing account.

  3. Step 3

    Select the "Phone Out" option. This will open your browser and take you to Yahoo! Voice account.

  4. Step 4

    Select the amount of credit you want to purchase. Press the "Buy Prepaid Credit" button.

  5. Step 5

    Choose payment option and pay for service.

  6. Step 6

    Return to Yahoo! Messenger. Search the tool bar for the "Actions" option. Scroll down to "Call Setup" and follow the "Yahoo! Call Setup Assistant" prompts.

  7. Step 7

    Check your prepaid balance to see if you have enough credit to make phone calls.

  8. Step 8

    Type in the phone number you want to call. Add a "+" in front of the country code for international calls. Otherwise, just enter the number one, followed by the area code and phone number for all United States phone numbers.

Tips & Warnings
  • When traveling outside of the United States use Yahoo! Messenger to call home. The cost is only 1 cent a minute. You can call toll free numbers free of charge.
  • Make sure to verify international calling rates on Yahoo! Messenger Phone Out service prior to calling international cell phone numbers.
