How to Avoid Neighbors

Your home is your sanctuary. You go there to unwind, relax and be yourself. But when neighbors get in the way of that peace and tranquility, it can really be disheartening for all parties involved. You basically have two options. You can either confront the offending neighbors, or you can learn to avoid your neighbors altogether. Here are some ways you can avoid your neighbors.

Things You'll Need

  • Online subscription to your local newspaper

Good fences make for better neighbors. One of the easiest ways to avoid neighbors is by building a privacy fence between your homes. Choose a fence that is at least 6-feet tall and doesn't have any gaps between the slats. Dog-eared varieties are a better choice than lattice work, which would allow them to see into your yard and give them more opportunity to catch you off guard.

Do some redecorating. Replace traditional blinds or curtains with heavy curtains that would block nosy neighbors from peeking inside and bothering you.

    • 3

Enlist the help of others. When you're out mowing your lawn or watering your plants, it's difficult to avoid neighbors. So instead of risking the chance of interaction, hire someone to do the dirty work for you.

    • 4

Choose your moves wisely. A little bit of recon work will help you avoid seeing your neighbors. Figure out what time they leave for work in the morning and what time they get home in the evening. Then adjust your own schedule accordingly to minimize the possibility of a chance meeting.

Change your newspaper subscription to an online version. That way, you don't have to worry about bumping into your neighbors while fetching the Sunday paper.

    • 6

Be a model neighbor yourself. If you avoid throwing wild parties or cranking up your stereo, then your neighbors have fewer reasons to come over and have contact with you. Make them think that you've moved out.

Very helpful info. I live in a highrise, and it is pretty difficult to avoid neighbor interaction when I am home. I don't know what it is about apartment buildings and people thinking they can just come over and bother me. I am paying to live here so it is my home; as far as I am concerned, they are just neighbors to me, nothing more. Stay on your side of the wall and I'll stay on mine.
