How to Attach a Boat Trailer to a Hitch

Before you take your boat to a lake or river you must properly attach the trailer to the hitch. Connect it the wrong way and the trailer can slip off and cause serious damage. Follow these steps to avoid any accidents.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Drop the trailer socket over the ball on the hitch so that it locks down. The socket and ball have to be the same size. Tighten the bolt so that it doesn't come apart during your travels.

  2. Step 2

Take safety chains to attach the trailer to the tow vehicle. Arrange the chains to form a criss-cross.

  3. Step 3

Set up the trailer lights. Test them to make sure the turn signals and brake lights work properly.

  4. Step 4

Practice driving with the boat trailer attached to the hitch in an area away from traffic. Make sure you can comfortably drive forward, turn and drive in reverse.

Tips & Warnings
  • The boat needs to be placed on the trailer in total balance. If it's tipped too far in any direction, the entire load will be off.
  • Make sure your towing vehicle has a full tank of gas and everything else it needs.
  • Secure the tie-down straps to avoid the boat coming loose.
  • Drain any water that has gathered in the boat before starting your trip.
  • Check the hitch laws in your state. Bumper hitches aren't suggested and aren't allowed in some states. Permanently attached hitches are best.
