How to Read Directions

To make fewer errors, we must know how to read directions effectively. Follow these steps. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Find the directions before starting the project. Check in the box or package the item was purchased in. For some projects, you may have to print the directions from a website, or use a do-it-yourself book with step-by-step instructions.

    • 2

Make sure to read the directions thoroughly. Do not start the project until you have read all the way through.

    • 3

Make sure all the tools, supplies and materials needed for the project are on hand. Have them out and ready to use--instead of going to get them in the middle of the project.

    • 4

Visualize what will need to be done after reading each step or direction in order to ensure comprehension. Re-read the steps if you're at all confused.

    • 5

Keep the directions nearby so they are easily accessible during the project. If the directions are lengthy, use sticky notes to mark different places in the steps.
