Follow these steps so that you can think like an insurance company and get auto insurance at a discount.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Have good credit. According to the Fair Credit Reporting Act, insurance companies can now use your credit information to determine both whether or not they want to insure you and how much your credit will affect your rate.

  2. Step 2

Take a safe driver class. Before you take a safe driver class, speak to your insurance company to confirm that it recognizes the institution you are using. It doesn't make sense to take a class only to find out that your insurance company does not recognize the school and won't give you a discount.

  3. Step 3

Place your homeowner's or renter's policy with the auto insurance company as well. Insurance companies offer what is called a multi-line discount if you place more than one line of insurance coverage with them.

  4. Step 4

Increase your deductibles. The higher the deductible, the lower your premium. However, before you go and increase your deductible, make sure you can handle the out of pocket expenses.

  5. Step 5

Ensure your teenage child has good grades. Insurance companies offer discounts to high school students with a B average or better.

  6. Step 6

Ask for other discounts. Never leave money on the table. Insurance agents know which discounts are available. For example, you're a senior citizen or retired military personnel you may qualify for a discount. Chat with your agent.

  7. Step 7

Don't take the first quote you get. Always shop.
