Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pen
  • Paper
  1. Step 1

Choose the genre of poetry that you would like to write. Will you write in haiku, free verse or in rhyme? Whichever genre you choose, get some books about this form of poetry.

  2. Step 2

Write freely and let yourself go. Poetry is truthful, raw, revealing and honest. It reveals the inner soul of the writer.

  3. Step 3

Join poetry groups and get involved in writers meetings and events. When you become part of the writer's community, you will feel a sense of support.

  4. Step 4

Go to a poetry reading. You do not have to get up on stage, but if you have the urge you can read out your own poetry and get feedback from the audience.

  5. Step 5

Take a poetry course and learn about all the different ways you can write poetry. There are a variety of online course and colleges that have this type of course.

  6. Step 6

Read some of the great poets out on the market. Try to write something like they did and see if you enjoy it. Either way, it will be more practice for you.

  7. Step 7

Start submitting your work to publishing companies. Look up the ones that take poetry submissions and ask them for their submission guidelines. Don't get discouraged by rejection letters. Many famous published poets have had thousands of rejection letters.
