Save Money and Spend Wisely

It isn't always easy to save money. Unfortunately, many people live paycheck to paycheck without any savings. Here are some strategies and techniques you can use to start saving some money for the future.

From Quick Guide: Save Money and Spend Wisely
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Create a budget for bills, food and other living expenses. A common rule of thumb would be to set aside 5 percent of your paycheck for savings. However, the more money you are able to save, the better.

  2. Step 2

Try using a "pay as you go" mobile phone, instead of having a home phone with long distance. Pay as you go can keep you from making any long distance calls on a whim and running up your phone bill.

  3. Step 3

When you are shopping for food or other essential items, make a list. It will help you to organize your spending habits.

  4. Step 4

Stay away from buying top brand names and designer labels. Shop at stores that offer discount prices. Try visiting flea markets.

  5. Step 5

Try not to believe in appearances. If you are trying to keep up with your rich neighbors, you might be disappointed. Take care of your future and forget about material things, like appearances.

  6. Step 6

Try walking, using public transport or using a bicycle to cut fuel costs. Driving a car can be expensive, particularly when you add in the cost of insurance.

  7. Step 7

Get rid of cable television or keep only basic cable to maintain your reception. If you like movies, join Netflix or Blockbuster Online and rent DVD's for a fraction of your monthly cable bill.

on 5/2/2009 I can easily save atleast $100-$200/month by planning ahead and shopping with discounted gift cards. My favorite site: http://www.dogpawgiftcards.com or be the first to know about hot cards/deals as soon as they come in @ http://twitter.com/DogPawGiftCards

on 9/27/2008 this is excellent advice, especially for the way the economy is now. Fuel prices are rising, so are food prices ... it's nice to be able to cut back to help absorb these costs

on 9/25/2008 I love to have a comfortable live, so instead of living like a poor or below your means, I always try to find a way to make extra income or passive income.
