If your tanning bed, which is usually quite effective, seems to be losing its power, then it may be time to replace your bulbs. Changing the bulbs when they have used 80 percent of their life expectancy will ensure a fully functioning tanning bed and an enjoyable tanning experience.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Note the make, model and year of your tanning bed before purchasing bulbs (aka lamps). Also jot down the size and wattage of bulbs used by your unit. The main sizes of tanning bulbs are F71, F72 and F73.

  2. Step 2

Research local stores that sell tanning supplies. The store where you purchased your tanning bed is a good starting point. Online forums such as Ebay are also good sources.

  3. Step 3

Buy bulbs in bulk. This will save you money in the long run.

  4. Step 4

Clean the bed and its acrylics and the new bulbs before installing. Confirm the cooling fans are working, as they should be.

  5. Step 5

Contact a tanning bed professional with your bed model information and bulb size. Removing the old and installing the new bulbs is a fairly simple process that he/she should be able to walk you through.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your bulbs have starters, this would be a good time to see if they need to be replaced as well. They require changing when it takes your bulbs longer than normal to start. If your bed gets a lot of use throughout the year, annual replacement is recommended.
  • Cleaning your bed, the acrylics on both sides, bulbs and confirming the ability of the cooling fans, are four optional steps that will help increase the life of your tanning bed.
  • When replacing bulbs, change all of them at once.
  • Inquire about discounts. Many stores offer them to salon owners.
