How to Save Money on Baby Formula

Many parents are unpleasantly surprised when they have to pay the cost of infant formula. Here are some ways to save money on this item while ensuring that your child gets the best nutrition possible.

1. Learn about formula checks. All major formula manufacturers have formula check programs. Visit their websites and join their "Baby Clubs." These companies will then send you newsletters full of informative parenting tidbits customized to your baby's stage of development. In addition, there will be one or two formula checks tucked neatly in the center of these publications that can be used to deduct a few dollars off the price of formula.

2. Use formula checks wisely. When in possession of formula checks, shoppers often get the best "bang for their buck" by purchasing the smallest can of formula. If you do not have formula checks, buy the biggest can possible, because the larger sizes have the smallest per-ounce price. If your friends or acquaintances also formula feed, you both should sign up for each others preferred formula manufacturers' newsletters and swap unwanted formula checks.

3. Shop at warehouse clubs. You may be surprised to learn that stores like Sam's and Costco carry formula, albeit in very large cans. Bulk savings can be substantial when comparing per-ounce costs.

4. Watch for sales and coupons. Occasionally stores will have sales on formula, or manufacturers will place coupons in the Sunday circulars. When this occurs, stock up on your favorite brands--just be sure to pay attention to the expiration dates on the bottoms of the cans.

5. Purchase powdered formula. "Ready-to-drink" formulas are substantially more expensive than powdered formulas. Parents will pay almost double for the convenience of not having to mix the formula and water themselves.

6. Consider other brands of formula. The United States government very heavily regulates formula content. Each formula manufacturer must meet strict minimum nutritional standards to have its products placed on store shelves. Unless your child has special needs or is under the direction of her doctor to consume a specific type of formula, feel free to feed her a variety of formulas, whichever are the best buys.

7. Try generic formula. Many parents shy away from generic formula because they feel guilty for not buying their child the "best" brand. You yourself probably eat generic canned vegetables or drink generic orange juice, and it is not damaging to your health. Similarly, generic formula can be just as good as those expensive name brands. These formulas are under the same strict FDA guidelines as brand-name formulas. Your child is not receiving sub-standard nutrition. Most major grocery stores, drug stores and large retailers have their own lower-priced store brands.
