Depress the brake gently, and check the mirrors. Getting out of the way while not causing an accident is the most important part of letting an ambulance through. While time is of the essence, it's more important that you follow safety precautions.
Step2
Signal which direction the car will be pulling off the road. In most cases, the right-hand side of the road is the best place to pull over, but sometimes it maybe better to pull to the left and leave an opening down the center of the street for the ambulance.
Step3
Stop the car completely on the side of the road. Stop your vehicle completely so that the car doesn't become a hazard to other vehicles on the road–especially the ambulance.
Step4
Check the mirrors to verify that there are no other emergency vehicles following in the wake of the ambulance. If there is an accident, there will be a line of emergency vehicles driving to or from that location.
Step5
Put on your signal and slowly merge back into traffic, making sure you don't cut off any vehicles as you resume driving.
Tips & Warnings
Failure to pull over for an ambulance or any emergency vehicle can result in a traffic violation and hefty fine. Always move out of the way for emergency vehicles.
