How to Deal With Suicidal Thoughts

The mind is a terrifying thing to someone who is having thoughts of suicide. These powerful thoughts are potentially very destructive and should be given the proper attention and care immediately. There are a variety of methods available for dealing with suicidal thoughts--but all require a willingness to receive the necessary help and support.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline immediately at 1-800-273-8255 to be directed to a crisis center. The call is free and your information is kept confidential.

  2. Step 2

    Talk with someone about your feelings and thoughts. Having suicidal thoughts doesn't mean you're crazy. It does mean you need to talk about the feelings you're experiencing and seek help. Tell a counselor, friend or family member immediately.

  3. Step 3

    Distance yourself from any means of suicide by removing medication, knives, weapons and other things from the home.

  4. Step 4

    Avoid using and abusing alcohol and drugs as a means to cope if you are having suicidal thoughts.

  5. Step 5

    Take extra care of yourself during this time. Eat well, get plenty of rest, exercise, spend time getting fresh air and sun, and try to engage in activities that you find enjoyable.

  6. Step 6

    Force yourself to be social and talk to others and be sure to seek proper help and treatment to deal with your suicidal thoughts.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you suspect that a person may be in distress or contemplating suicide, ask them if they need help and be sure they seek treatment immediately.
  • Suicidal thoughts should be taken very seriously. Seek the help of a medical professional immediately.
