Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Ask friends and family. The best way to find an attorney for any matter is through a reliable reference. A family member may have gone through a similar tax issue or may be a tax professional herself. Ask your accountant or financial planner. They will know who has a good reputation for particular tax issues in the community.
Step2
Visit the American Bar Association (ABA) website. The ABA is a voluntary professional association. The ABA accredits law schools, develops continuing legal education, provides information about the law, and contains a lawyer referral service. Choose the Find Legal Help button and this will take you to a map. Choose your state and then choose the field of law you need help in. This is a tax and a real estate issue. Choose a tax attorney if your have a choice, since the tax attorney is more specific.
Step3
Access the Tax Payer Advocacy page on the Internal Revenue Service's website. This site will give you advice on who can help you with your particular issue.
Step4
Contact a law school tax law professor. Law schools are filled with lawyers doing research on different issues. The tax attorneys and some real estate attorneys may have done research and wrote articles on the like-kind exchange. Let the professors do the research of the most competent attorney's work and then ask the professor who they would recommend. Most professors have a few minutes to give you a few names.
