Step 1
Talk to your sex partner about your concerns. Explain to him or her that you have some symptoms or want to take an STD test just to be safe and that maybe your partner should get one, too.
-
Step 2
Call your physician or local public health center and inquire about STD testing. Planned Parenthood is a reliable STD testing center if you don't have a regular doctor.
-
Step 3
Schedule your appointment once you know the test is anonymous or confidential. However, health insurance companies do request specifics regarding STD tests--check with your provider to determine their specifica policy.
-
Step 4
Arrive at your doctor's office or STD testing center on time. Bringing your sex partner, a friend, or other supportive person you trust eases any jitters you may have about your STD test.
-
Step 5
Remain positive throughout the testing procedure. Some diseases are diagnosed differently. Some tests require physical exams, blood work or both.
-
Step 6
Expect your results in one to two weeks, depending on the lab. Remind the office or health center not to identify themselves on an answering machine if you share your telephone with someone else who doesn't know about your situation.
